The Art Gallery of Mississauga’s two-part exhibition, Art at Work: Corporate Collecting Practices Today questions the role of art in the Canadian corporate world. It provides context for strategies of collecting and investigates notions of private patronage and ownership. The exhibition also demonstrates the prominence of photography in recent acquisitions of many Canadian corporate collections and presents a selection of the highlights of several major banks, prominent Toronto law firms, Mississauga manufacturers and other corporations. Guest curated by Geraldine Davis, the exhibition will run from 24 June to 1 August and 5 August to 12 September. The Projects: Port Credit is the sequel to the Blackwood Gallery's off-site exhibition of the same name presented in summer 2009. This pair of exhibitions aims to reimagine Port Credit, Mississauga by engaging with the issues and concerns of the local community through the lens of contemporary art. The selected artists will provide a perspective on the socio-economic engines of an area undergoing rapid transformations. The exhibition will feature new and commissioned work by Adam Bobbette, Peter Flemming, Sarah Febbraro, Claudio Ghirardo, Sonja Hidas, Gwen MacGregor, Fedora Romita, Cheryl Rondeau, Derek Sullivan, and Jessica Vallentin. Curated by Director/Curator Christof Migone, the exhibition will run from 27 June to 25 July. At Oakville Galleries, the hyper-realist sculptures of Australian-born, London-based Ron Mueck presented in the exhibition Real Life depict some of life’s blunt realities: that we are born into a world that is not of our making, and that aging and death are unavoidable. Israeli-born, Berlin-based Guy Ben-Ner, by contrast, often uses humour to tackle our everyday life through engaging videos and installations featuring himself and his family. Together, these two artists create a dialogue about the balance between the physical and emotional elements of the human condition. Organized and circulated by the National Gallery of Canada, the exhibition is presented at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens and at Centennial Square from 26 June to 5 September. In-kind support by Whole Foods Market, Oakville.
